Preston One Act Play 2010 Festival Rules

  • The Festival is promoted by the Broughton Players and is organised by a Sub Committee of the Players. The Sub Committee will appoint a box-office Manager; The Broughton Players Treasurer will be the Festival Treasurer.
  • The Festival is open to any Amateur Society in Preston and the surrounding area.
  • The Aims are:
  • To raise the profile of theatre in the North West.
  • To set high standards in stagecraft excellence.
  • To encourage new directors and producers to theatre work.
  • An Adjudicator will be invited to comment publicly on the plays and performances at the close of each evening.
  • The Festival will be competitive. Five trophies will be awarded: - one for the Best Overall Production: one each for the best director, best performance, individual achievement and one at the discretion of the Adjudicator. The sub-committee will pay for the adjudicator’s fees.
  • At present there are no grants towards the royalties as Preston Arts Association are no longer the Agency for granting Arts funding. The Broughton Players will grant royalties up to a maximum amount of £20 towards the royalties of any production on receipt of a copy of the licence from the Publisher of the play.
  • A non-returnable deposit of £30 will be paid for each entry. Cheques to be made payable to ‘The Broughton Players’.
  • Each team will receive 12 free tickets for the night of their production. Extra tickets are available from Mrs Julie Hall Tel 01772 463122
  • The sub-committee will hire the Preston Playhouse for the evenings during the festival and for Sunday prior to the Festival for on-stage rehearsals . The hire charge payable by entrants for on-stage rehearsal will be £12 per hour to be paid on the day of the rehearsal. Sound and lighting equipment will be available, as will the festival stage manager and sound and lighting technicians.

  • The Sub-Committee will organise publicity material and tickets, but all participating Societies will be expected to distribute publicity material and to sell tickets.
  • The price of tickets will be £8.00 (£7.00 for Concessions). Season ticket prices will depend on the length of the Festival, however at present it is anticipated they will be priced at £18 (£15 for OAP’s and children) and will be limited to 75 tickets.
  • The seating capacity of the Playhouse is 199. It is important that groups tryand sell as many tickets as possible. Further tickets, above the free allocation to each group, will be available at a buy 10 get one free rate . It is essential that each group should sell as many tickets as possible if the festival is to remain viable.
  • At the end of the Saturday adjudication, the Adjudicator comments on the week’s productions, awards the five trophies, and presents certificates to all the participating groups. We are making it a condition of entry that each group should have at least two tickets for the Saturday evening so that a representative is available to accept their Societies certificate and any trophies awarded to them. (Season tickets are acceptable )
  • All ticket income should be paid no later than the evening of your group’s performance. Contact Festival Box Office Manager Julie Hall on 01772 463122.
  • The Festival will end on Saturday 26 th June 2010 and will consist of a maximum of 14 entries . Groups will only be allowed to enter 1 play until the entry cut off date of 26 th March. If there are spaces available after the cut off date further entries will be considered on first come first served basis . There will be two, three or four plays each evening with curtain-up at 7:30pm. The Sub-Committee will organise a programme to include a suitable cross–section of plays on each evening. If there are any evenings during the week when a participating group will definitely NOT be available this MUST be stated in Section 1 of the attached entry form.
  • Entries must be made on the attached forms by the dates indicated.
  • Stage set-up will be limited to 10 minutes and striking to 5 minutes. The first team each evening will be allowed on stage at 7:20pm
  • The maximum performance time allowed for each play will be 45mins.
  • A curtain set will be available at the Playhouse . To be fair to all groups, the participating group should provide all props and scenery.
  • The Sub-Committee will appoint Festival Stage Manager and sound/lighting technicians to assist participating teams. Each team may provide its own Stage Manager and groups may provide their own sound and lighting technicians if they so wish.
  • A progress meeting will be held at the Playhouse Theatre at 7:30pm on Monday 22nd March 2010 to which groups participating or considering participating are cordially invited
  • Any profit will pass to Preston Playhouse. Any loss will be borne by Preston Playhouse.
