The central character is dear old Mum, who keeps a tight hold on her three sons, binding them to her with gifts, threats, and ruthless exploitation of their weaknesses. But as the family is unwillingly brought together to celebrate Mum’s wedding anniversary and despite the fact that Dad has been dead for some years, revolt is in the air.
Middle son, Terry, gathers the courage to tell mum he is emigrating with his family to Canada, and youngest son Tom breaks the news of his impending marriage. Mum fights back with every weapon in her formidable armoury.
