History
Preston Drama Club PDC put on their first production in 1933. The play was 'Ebbtide', written and produced by Robert Lambert, and performed at Bairstow Street School, Avenham, Preston. Later that year the group moved to Grimshaw Street School, where they stayed until 1949, the year Columba Hall, today's Playhouse building, was completed as a theatre.
In the early days you had to be invited to become a member of PDC. This changed in 1957, when the first open auditions were held. In more recent times, membership has been available to all those who show an interest in the theatre.
PDC today
PDC produces five plays and a pantomime at the Playhouse each year. Last season PDC won the best performance award at the Broughton One Act theatre festival for Penalty. Broughton players Adrienne Hurley won best director for the same play. And Ian Rushton won the best individual achievement award for his half hour production of Macbeth.
Come on, get involved
As Don Stephenson, Club President, and member since 1957 says, “you don’t have to be an actor to join the group.” From lighting and sound to stage management, prop, costume and set design; there are many ways to get involved.
