Mystery as ghost disappears

Alison Brown

Alison Brown looks under the stage for signs of the missing ghosts

For cleaning lady Alison Brown, that there have been ghosts at the Playhouse for many years is no laughing matter.

Neither sceptical nor scared, she has learnt to live with these mischievous creatures, and even greets them on her arrival at work. But ever since a séance was held last Easter, the mystery of the ghosts has become, for Alison, the mystery of their disappearance.

Last Easter Clitheroe Paranormal, a group who investigate strange phenomenon and evidence of the paranormal, requested to spend a night at the Playhouse to investigate the legend of Playhouse ghost.

After several quiet hours, strange activity alerted the group to the presence of a ghost. There was a sudden drop in temperature, green flashing lights and a sudden rush of air, which made one group member jump.

The group later reported to the LEP that they had made contact with a ghost named Albert, who was looking for his two children, Henry and Margaret. They were said to be delighted by their findings, and one group member told of how he was so mesmerised he did not want to leave.

Four months later, the talk is no longer of the ghost but of the renovations, repairs and rehearsals for the upcoming season; that is for everybody but Alison, who is now wondering what they did to her ghostly companions.

“I’m not happy about it. If they know a place is haunted they shouldn’t do a séance,” said Alison. “It’s dangerous. You might get more than you bargained for.”

Alison now believes that the séance may have caused the ghosts to flee, or go into hiding. “It’s strange. I used to hear them often, but I haven’t heard anything since they came.”

According to Playhouse lore, the ghost or ghosts were probably there before the building became a theatre in 1949. Many have put the ghosts’ origin down to the history of the building as a Quaker meeting house, with a burial ground on adjoining land. This is backed up by Clitheroe Paranormal’s account that Albert was looking for his children who had been buried there.
